Do you still think Lord Voldemort was the worst and darkest wizard to have ever lived? Well, you’re very wrong: there were characters who pulled off even worse things.

Throughout the entire Harry Potter franchise, both books and movies, we keep hearing the same thing: Lord Voldemort, aka Tom Riddle Jr., is the Darkest wizard in history. However, if we look closer, Voldemort was more of a psychotic terrorist — and the truly evil masterminds were hidden behind the pages of history books.

Enter Herpo the Foul.

Even his name kind of suggests that this guy wasn’t OK, doesn’t it? Well, that’s because he really, really wasn’t. This man single-handedly invented two terrible, terrible things, meaning he was more than familiar with Dark Arts, and actually, Tom Riddle Jr. later used both of them to instill fear into those opposing him.

First of all, Herpo the Foul created the very first Basilisk. Yes, that monstrous giant snake that lived under the Hogwarts castle was a distant relative of Herpo’s creation. Admittedly, this wasn’t such a dark act since all Herpo did was make a toad take care of a chicken egg, and that produced the first King of Serpents. But still!

Herpo the Foul definitely was quite an ill-minded individual since, after seeing the monstrosity he’d created, he immediately decided that it was a phenomenal idea to breed those things. In the future, his decision would lead to his horrible creation’s successor terrorizing Hogwarts and repeatedly assaulting Muggle-borns under Riddle’s command.

Second of all, Herpo the Foul invented Horcruxes. Apart from being simply the embodiment of Dark Arts, it’s painfully obvious there was no way for Herpo to create a Horcrux accidentally: in the Harry Potter books, it was mentioned several times that a simple murder wasn’t enough, and there were specific steps to it.

This means that Herpo likely had to kill numerous people after finally getting the result he wanted. After splitting his own soul, this kind-hearted man left instructions for the brave and the bold who wanted to follow in his footsteps, and centuries later, that’s exactly what Lord Voldemort did. Another point to Herpo the Foul for this one.

So basically, this one ancient wizard was responsible for the creation of two Darkest things possible — save for Dementors, of course, who were created by a different mage. Now, do you still think that Voldemort, who merely used Herpo’s evil inventions, was the Darkest wizard of all time?
