One of the recent theories that is gaining popularity is that Mel's father may no longer be alive. This brings us to Lily's late husband Buck. The most obvious choice for the fans is Doc. Vernon Mullins is now Mel’s boss, as he is the local physician. He is mayor Hope’s husband, but the viewers believe he might have had something with Mel’s mother in the past.

The main reasons to believe that he is actually the father are, for example, his appropriate age, and the fact that their relationship grew from almost hatred to this real father-daughter-like dynamic. The fans grew fond of their duo, and having Doc as Mel’s real father wouldn't come as a huge surprise.
