What does the show lack?

Summary:

  • The TV show The Gentlemen, which currently tops the Netflix ratings, is a story created by Guy Ritchie based on his own movie.
  • The Gentlemen movie follows different characters, but the plots of both stories revolve around the same weed farm.
  • The audience rating of the movie and the show are practically the same, but the critics still find the series slightly less impressive.

If you had any confusion about why 2019's The Gentlemen is suddenly dominating Netflix's most-watched chart, it should be gone by now. With so many people constantly buzzing about the new show, it's almost impossible to miss it.

The series The Gentlemen doesn't follow the premise of the movie, but it recreates the same vibe and perfectly matches the amount of action, humor and drama that viewers would expect from the story with such a title. Led by Theo James and Kaya Scodelario, Guy Ritchie's TV debut is an undeniable success.

However, for some reason, viewers seem to be more excited about this premiere than the critics. So far, the big screen version of The Gentlemen has a 5% higher rating on Rotten Tomatoes than its Netflix counterpart.

Is The Gentlemen TV Show Better Than the Movie?

The TV show follows Eddie, an aristocrat who inherits an estate with a secret underground business. However, Eddie has no interest in being associated with the criminals, so he decides not to play by their rules and puts up a fight.

Both the movie and the TV show have been well received by audiences. The Rotten Tomatoes audience score for the movie is 84%, and for the show so far, it hovers between 84% and 85%, indicating the same positive reaction. People praise Theo James as the action lead, as well as Guy Ritchie's ability to bring the same big-budget feel to the smaller screen.

The critics, however, don't seem to agree. While the 5% difference isn't that significant, the series still failed to reach the heights that the movie did in their eyes. What's even more interesting is that the very thing that audiences praise as ‘consistency’ is what critics call ‘repetitiveness’ and the director's lack of growth.

Besides the genre staying the same and the show relying too much on the success of its predecessor, the critics also find the format of the story less suitable for the miniseries than for the movie. Too much action and too much story drag makes The Gentlemen harder to watch than it needs to be.

Ironically, many believe that The Gentlemen would benefit from being turned into a movie sequel. However, if you haven't had a chance to watch the TV show and decide for yourself which is better, you can do so by streaming The Gentlemen on Netflix.
