The rumors came after the news of Harry Potter getting a TV reboot, just like Twilight.

At the time of its release, The Vampire Diaries seemed like yet another project about vampirism — a super popular topic at the time — and unrequited love between vampires and ordinary humans.

However, the show turned out to be much more than that, gradually outgrowing its competitors to become an important part of pop culture of the 2010s.

Though the series ended in 2017, fans still return to it, secretly dreaming that the project will one day be rebooted. Today, more and more rumors about a possible reboot are circulating in the fandom.

In a recent interview, Nina Dobrev, who played the lead role of Elena Gilbert, weighed in on those rumors.

"I think it's way too soon to be talking about a reboot because the show didn't even end that long ago," the star said.

The actress added that she would not refuse a similar role in another vampire movie or show, but there are certain conditions — Nina is ready to sign up for a project if Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese take over the shooting. Surely, that's the kind of production any actor would wish to join!

Julie Plec, the showrunner of The Vampire Diaries, is quite open to the idea of doing a sequel, a reboot, or any other type of Vampire Diaries-related project one day.

The showrunner even noted that she had included a few little hints of a possible sequel in the final episodes of The Vampire Diaries. With those 'tools,' Plec hopes to keep the franchise alive beyond the original show and its two spin-offs, The Originals and Legacies.
On the other hand, the male part of the cast is not so positive about the reboot idea.

Paul Wesley, who played Stefan Salvatore, has ruled out a return to his iconic vampire role. The actor added that eight seasons is a long time, and his work on The Vampire Diaries is a thing of the past.

His co-star Ian Somerhalder also commented a few years ago that the show's time had passed. Even though he is glad that The Vampire Diaries is still in the hearts of fans, Somerhalder is not keen to reprise the role of Damon Salvatore.
