US Squid Game Remake Will Only Satisfy Fans on One (Unlikely) Condition
Hollywood is on a remake spree, and one particular idea has already driven fans crazy.
South Korean TV series Squid Game has become something of a cultural phenomenon, inspiring people around the world to wear pink jumpsuits.
Such an overwhelming success could not go unnoticed in Hollywood. And now, apparently, the US wants to make its own Squid Game.
However, fans who have learned from the bitter experiences of the past are not exactly happy to hear this.
Fans recall the flopped remake of the cult anime Death Note, as well as the adaptation of The Witcher, which has been in the news lately mainly due to scandals.
Numerous fans of the Korean show fear that the remake will suffer the same fate. Instead of a remake, fans suggest another version — a spin-off, since the idea of creating a Squid Game in different countries with its own characteristics has been up in the air for a long time.
"Make it a spin off instead of a remake. Have original characters instead of Analogue of characters from the original.
They can even make a character from the Korean version wake up in a hospital and be told that he/she entertained the VIP so he/she is given a chance to recover and play on this foreign version," Reddit user Future_Immortal commented.
Much of the original series leans on the socio-economic situation in South Korea, which plays an important role in the plot, and fans assume that the American remake may simply devalue the show's message.
What's more, the Korean series has broken more than one fan's heart by killing off favorite characters, and Hollywood's love for happy endings can also affect the plot for the worse, fans say.
"Hollywood also likes to go for feel-good endings, they would probably have half the main cast alive and winning the game," Reddit user zxcvzzzzxz said.
Director of the original series Hwang Dong-hyuk, however, supports the idea of international spin-offs, as according to him, he initially hinted in the series that the game was not only in Korea.
"I thought that if the show did well, I wanted to expand the universe further, so that other countries could have their own version of the Squid Game," the director said in his Deadline interview.
Fans can only wait for the news and hope that the creators of the remake will listen to them and Hwang Dong-hyuk, and do something new instead of making the same old mistakes.
