Unpopular Opinion Suggests Rachel Should've Ended Up With Joey on Friends
I totally get why people didn't like this storyline. It felt a bit forced and even Matt LeBlanc and Jennifer Aniston are on record saying they hated it. And yet there are plenty of users on Reddit who think it was the right direction for the show to take.
Ross Geller, some say, is arguably one of the most obnoxious, whiny, self-obsessed, and generally unlikeable characters to have appeared on TV ever. They say he has no redeeming features. And let's not forget that Rachel spends a fair amount of time mocking pretty much everything he likes, says and does.
To be fair, Ross is pretty critical of Rachel too. Which is why some think they simply don't work together. Sure, the whole he fancied her when he was younger (and even the, he's besotted with her when she comes back into his life as an adult) makes sense. But developing that relationship beyond a few dates was, for some fans, unrealistic. And getting back together after the whole 'on a break' issue was seen as a step too far.
But what makes them think that Rachel and Joey were so well-suited?
One TBBT Moment So Cringe, Even the Writers Wish They Could Undo It
Well, Rachel is superficial and all about looks and status. As is Joey. She's a little below-average intelligence but gets by on a diet of unfounded optimism about her own place in society. As does Joey. And she pretty much wants to have sex with every hot guy she sees. And, once again, there is a very similar trait in Joey Tribbiani.
So, the question really is why Joey and Rachel didn't end up together.
Putting aside the fact that they had been friends for years by the time they briefly had a thing going on – and the obvious Ross factor (what with him just being around the whole time) – many fans say they were the couple most likely to get together out of the six characters that featured in the show.
Sure, it would have been a relationship fraught with tantrums, arguments and petty one-upmanship, but, they argue, it would have made sense. Maybe after so many years of build-up, the writers just thought getting Ross and Rachel back together was the right thing to do and would satisfy their audiences' hunger for the ending they wanted.

Maybe the Joey and Rachel idea was one that was rejected due to a negative response from the public. And there is the argument that an iconic show like Friends owes its fans something. After all, it's just a bit of light relief.
So, perhaps Ross and Rachel ending up together was the right thing for the show. But that won't change the view of some Reddit users who are utterly convinced Joey and Rachel were far more suited to each other.
