Underrated Halloween Horror from Twilight Director Just Blew Up Prime Video Streaming Charts
You missed one of the main horror gems of the past year.
Halloween, beloved by all horror fans, has long since developed a certain cult of movies closely associated with the holiday. In addition to the franchise of the same name, Scream, Jeepers Creepers, and Terrifier are in one way or another linked to Halloween.
It seems impossible to squeeze into the tight row of these horror stories, but the film released in 2023 by the creator of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, David Slade, succeeded.
David Slade Went from Horror Movies to Twilight
David Slade first made a name for himself in the big cinema in 2005 with the thriller Hard Candy, followed by horror 30 Days of Night. But then Slade deceived everyone – his next step was... Twilight.
Then the director moved from feature films to television. He directed several episodes of Hannibal and American Gods, helped create Breaking Bad, and directed the experimental interactive Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch.
Slade then disappeared for five years, but returned triumphantly in 2023 with a new horror film, an adaptation of the acclaimed novel Dark Harvest by Norman Partridge.
Dark Harvest Was Overshadowed by Bigger Releases
Dark Harvest recently broke into the Prime Video Top 10 chart, but the reason why you might not have heard anything about this movie is simple. The MGM could not find a release date for the movie, and when the date was confirmed, Dark Harvest was released without any advertising or marketing promotion directly on streaming platforms.
There's no better time than October for Halloween horror movies, but the competition is so fierce that viewers risk missing out on something truly worthwhile. It happened to Dark Harvest, which was overshadowed by other releases.
What is Dark Harvest About?
Every year on Halloween night, a creature the locals call Sawtooth Jack wakes up in a cornfield and tries to get to the church before midnight, while armed young men try to finish him off.
High school student Richie dreams of killing the monster and becoming a hero like his older brother last year, and despite his parents' protests, runs away from home on the night of the big hunt.
Dark Harvest is a Breath of Fresh Air in the Horror Genre
Despite all the not-so-original components, Dark Harvest manages to show individuality. The movie has obvious Halloween overtones, but at times the movie becomes more like the mystical The Village or the fantastic The Maze Runner.
Dark Harvest maintains a constant atmosphere of mystery that keeps the audience following the characters as they search for answers to questions about Sawtooth's origins and his true nature.
After all, this is a truly scary movie with a sinister villain, burning buildings, and rivers of blood.
