Twilight is peak cringe cinema, but for the most part, we not only allow it, we wholeheartedly love it.

From the infamous woods scene where Bella confronts Edward about him being a vampire to the whole “you’re like my own personal brand of heroin” debacle, Twilight has been a unique cultural phenomenon since the 2000s.

There is nothing quite like it, and hopefully there never will be.

There are but a few truly awkward scenes in most movies, while the vampire saga can boast only a few scenes that don’t make you uncomfortable.

One deleted scene is actually the worst – if it had been included in the final cut, we would have positively died of cringe.

Everything is bad about it, and we mean everything. Bella takes way too long to get into the car (and looks like she is deeply offended by the very existence of cars all throughout).

Emmett says to Edward, “She is not one of us” (which, frankly, makes no sense). Jasper is just there looking like a wax figure from a horror movie that is about to come to life, and Edward is being… well, Edward.

This scene makes the average viewer go, “What?” (just like Bella does in her car seemingly to herself). Like, why does Edward look constipated? Why are Emmett and Bella saying their lines? What is really going on?

Hardcore Twilight fans actually explain it all. Turns out, Stephenie Meyer’s Midnight Sun, which is a retelling of Twilight from Edward’s perspective, provides some answers. Edward can barely compose himself because the hot air in the car has made Bella’s blood much tastier to him. Yes, that is actual book canon. Imagine that.

In the scene, Bella gets into the car and quietly expresses her shock at the others’ behavior by saying “What?” to herself. Edward is suspicious that Bella might be a vampire since he can’t read her mind, and he is surprised by Bella’s comment, thinking that she knows that he can hear her.

Emmett understands Edward’s concern and expresses his opinion when he remarks that Bella is “not one of them [vampires].”

We would never have understood that scene back in 2008 – Edward’s mind is a mess of its own, and it took a whole other book for fans to truly get him.
