Would Pattinson be able to get over himself and return to Twilight?

Summary

  • Bella Swan and Edward Cullen are key characters in The Twilight Saga, and no one can replace its original stars, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.
  • While they won't be reprising their original roles in the series, they could make cameo appearances.
  • However, given the actors' history with the Twilight franchise and their current status in Hollywood, this is unlikely.

Let's face it, Twilight wouldn't be Twilight without the story of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, and whoever is cast in those roles for the series (even if it's Jacob Elordi and Jenna Ortega, as director Catherine Hardwicke suggested), no one can replace Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, as fans will always associate them with their favorite characters.

Unfortunately, it's pretty obvious that they won't be able to return to their roles, but there is an interesting way to bring them back to the franchise.

Twilight's Main Duo Could Be Perfect for These Roles

Even if Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were really excited about Lionsgate's upcoming project, they probably wouldn't have been able to land roles where one is a high schooler and the other is pretending to be one. After all, Stewart is now 33 and Pattinson is 37.

Still, it's not uncommon for creators of remakes and reboots to add original actors to iconic roles as a little nod to both the original work and the actors themselves. Netflix 's hit series Wednesday is a recent example, with Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, playing teacher Ms. Thornhill.

In other words, Stewart and Pattinson could have landed other, more appropriate roles. Edward's adoptive parents, Carlisle and Esme Cullen, would have been a great option. After all, their original portrayers, Peter Facinelli and Elizabeth Reaser, were about the same age at the time of their involvement in the films.

Alas, That's Unlikely to Happen

Surely the producers would be happy to add so much fan service to the upcoming show, knowing that just as Rings of Power failed to replace Peter Jackson's original LOTR trilogy, the new Twilight series is unlikely to be received any warmer than the original movies. But sadly, that's more likely to remain our fan dreams: maybe some of the original cast members would be happy to return as cameos in the new project, but definitely not Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

For one thing, the Twilight fandom is well aware of how much the original Edward actor loathes the franchise, something he has publicly stated on several occasions. While he has never criticized the cast and crew, or the fact that the movies have been able to further his career, he hates both the character he played and the work of Stephenie Meyer.

'He's the most ridiculous person who's so amazing at everything. I think a lot of actors tried to play that aspect. I just couldn't do that. And the more I read the script, the more I hated this guy, so that's how I played him, as a manic-depressive who hates himself. Plus, he's a 108-year-old virgin, so he's obviously got some issues there,' he told Empire.

Stewart was much more reserved in her sentiments, but in a conversation with Interview, she noted that her role required serious acting, only it was hard to convince other productions that she was a 'serious actor' right after Twilight.

But both she and Pattinson have done it, both starring in complex dramatic roles alongside other acclaimed actors and under the direction of world-renowned filmmakers. Will they want to return to the old roles that almost cemented their typecast status? We don't think so.

All of The Twilight Saga movies are available for streaming on Starz, Fubo TV and Peacock Premium. As for the series, we will have to wait and see which service or network the project will end up on.
