It’s not Bella’s being an awkward teen that makes her repulsive, it’s her blatant disregard for human lives as long as she likes the murderer’s sparkly skin.

Summary:

  • Twilight fans often scold Bella Swan for her awkward behavior that’s completely normal for a lost teenager.
  • However, fans largely ignore a much bigger problem with Bella: her attitude to others’ lives.
  • When Edward tells Bella he killed many people, she doesn’t care about it and says so despite having no context yet.

Even the biggest Twilight fans often admit they don’t like the main characters for one reason or the other. But while Edward’s abusive control-freak nature in a relationship is yesterday’s news, Bella Swan tends to get bashed for all the wrong reasons. The way she behaves is largely justified by her being a teenage girl with a troubled mother who just moved towns and fell for a popular local bad boy, that’s it!

Well… That’s almost it. One part of Bella's character remains repulsive still, and surprisingly, it’s the part we barely see anyone bring up in the discussions.

Bella Swan Doesn’t Mind Edward’s Murders

In one of Twilight's most iconic scenes, Bella and Edward talk about the latter’s nature in the forest, and Bella shares her knowledge about vampires and her suspicion that Edward is one of the undead predators. His reaction is childishly noble, of course, but he does the right thing and tells her about his past crimes.

Edward reveals he killed many people before. No context yet — that’s important.

What’s Bella’s immediate reaction?

It goes along the lines of, “I don’t care about all the people you killed whatsoever, you’re hot and I want to be with you.” That’s before Edward even mentions that he only hunted down criminals and other terrible people! Bella Swan straight-up admits she doesn’t care about murders as long as the murderer has shiny skin and looks handsome! Such a blatant disregard for human lives is just staggering.

Some may argue that this, too, can be addressed by the fact that Bella was a young naive teenager, and that’s partially true. But not all teenagers react with an instant IDC when someone they like confesses their murders, so that’s definitely Bella’s personality trait that makes us see her as… A morally questionable person, to say the least.

So the next time someone brings up how stupid Bella is, you know what to say.
