Season 4 of the iconic crime anthology series True Detective, which has been airing on HBO since 2014, was divisive for fans. Though True Detective may be over for many viewers, the cast from past seasons continues to bring us some quality television. Season two star Colin Farrell, for example, is now partnering with Apple TV Plus for the mind-bending noir crime drama Sugar.

What Is Colin Farrell’s New Apple TV Show?

Led by Colin Farrell, who will portray the title character, California private investigator John Sugar, the show promises to hit all the sweet spots for fans of the genre. The charismatic lead will take on the hopeless case of a young woman's disappearance and end up getting caught up in a much scarier conspiracy.

“Sugar is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture and television history: the private detective story,” the official description claims.

Watching the trailer for the show, it's impossible not to notice Sugar's resemblance to Detective Ray Velcoro. Although his public image is much more polished than that of the corrupt True Detective lead, he has a very similar personality. Both are ruthless, short-tempered and prone to self-destruction.

Apple TV Plus had to go through a lot of bidding wars to get the Colin Farrell series, so hopefully they used the opportunity wisely. In addition to playing John Sugar, the actor is executive producing the show with Mark Protosevich, Simon Kinberg and others. Fernando Meirelles is credited as the director.
