For many adults, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is but a fond memory from years ago, but in reality, the franchise is alive and kicking — and it already earned $1 billion this year.

TMNT has a long story, one that goes decades back, and there have been more than a couple of generations raised watching the adventures of the four green brothers. Apart from Michael Bay’s live-action movies, most people haven’t really heard much about the franchise, but the thing is, it’s still doing great.

Nostalgia is a great marketing force, and Disney knows that, so even in 2023, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are seeing major commercial success. This could’ve been happening under our radars, but numbers don’t lie: despite this year only being halfway done, TMNT has already earned over $1 billion — and it keeps going!

It happened thanks to the recent release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, a computer-animated movie that reinvigorated both the happy memories of the folks at home who fondly remember their favorite heroes — and the franchise itself. The movie came out on August 2, and it’s doing pretty well at this point.

Despite having insane competitors like Barbie and Oppenheimer that are absolutely dominating the theaters worldwide, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is already reaching $100 million. Currently, the movie sits on just over $94 million, and while these numbers might not sound as impressive as those of Gerwig and Nolan’s hits, it’s quite a feat.

The release of Mutant Mayhem and its theatrical achievements boosted merchandise sales tremendously, and while it’s been less than two weeks since the movie’s premiere, the global sales under the TMNT brand have already pushed over the $1B mark. This really goes to show how much people still love the Turtles, doesn’t it?

Apart from the movie and the merch, the brand’s collaborations with huge players like Pizza Hut and Xbox boosted sales, too. The two massive companies worked with TMNT to produce pizza-themed marketing products, and it’s safe to say that these partnerships turned out to be more than fruitful — so worry not, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are still alive and kicking!
