Top 3 Terrible Trailers That Almost Ruined Decent Movies
Promotion for these movies did them a disservice.
Fans always look forward to seeing trailers for the highly anticipated blockbusters, but the short video can sometimes ruin the audience's expectations for the movie. Here are three examples of when the trailer almost destroyed the idea and discouraged some fans from watching the film itself.
1. Edge of Tomorrow ( 2014)
Action movies starring Tom Cruise always send waves of enthusiasm across the fandom, and Edge of Tomorrow was no exception.
The movie is set in the not-too-distant future where a race of aliens invades Earth and no army in the world can stand up to them. Major William Cage (Cruise) dies in battle, but the impossible happens and he finds himself in a time loop.
Though the film was critically acclaimed, Edge of Tomorrow did not do well at the box office, and it's likely that the trailer was to blame for it. Instead of an intriguing video to promote the upcoming movie, the studio gave fans a jumbled mix of action, some tragic music, and unintelligible shots of Tom Cruise looking at Emily Blunt.
2. Stardust (2007)
The movie by Matthew Vaughn seemed like a flop at the beginning, but with time, it has found its fan base and even got the status of one of the best works in the fantasy genre.
In Stardust, the action takes place in a small English village separated by an ancient wall from a supernatural parallel universe where magic and sorcery reign. Young Tristan Thorn recklessly promises the most beautiful girl in the village that he will bring her a star that has fallen on the other side of the wall, and sets off on a journey.
Despite its great direction and compelling plot, the trailer made Stardust look like a second-rate fantasy with cringe-worthy humor, cheap action, and an inarticulate love story.
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
The plot of Michel Gondry's legendary film revolves around Joel, a shy guy who lives a boring life. But one day, instead of his usual route, the young man reaches the sea, where he sees a woman with bright hair, Clementine, and then meets her on the train again.
Joel falls in love with Clementine and soon learns that they were a couple in the past.
While the trailer was good in that it revealed the intricate structure of the movie, it failed to convey the film's magical atmosphere, making the story look like an ordinary comedy with lame jokes.
Luckily, the audience was able to recognize the movie's worth, and Eternal Sunshine is still considered one of the best cinematic stories exploring the nature of love.
