We understand, it's too hard to follow the intricacies of a two-show universe.

The Sandman graphic novel is, without exaggeration, Neil Gaiman 's magnum opus, his most ambitious and complex work. It has won the love of many fans, spawned numerous spin-offs, won several awards, and gone through more than one reprint.

The idea of adapting The Sandman, initially as a feature film, appeared in the late 1990s, but due to creative differences the project got stuck in production hell. It was only in 2019 that a deal between Netflix and Warner Bros. was announced, which led to the long-awaited adaptation – already in the form of a series.

The Sandman, released in 2022, was a definite success – it received 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and unconditional love from fans of the comic as well as viewers unfamiliar with the original source.

The second season of The Sandman does not yet have a release date, but Netflix decided to ease the fans' anticipation by releasing Dead Boy Detectives – the series set in the same universe as The Sandman.

Dead Boy Detectives Has 2 The Sandman Cameos

Dead Boy Detectives has already become a hit on Netflix. It was compared to Riverdale, another dark teen detective series that ended last year and gained cult status over seven seasons. Another line of comparison is, of course, The Sandman itself.

At the same time, the on-screen relationship is also indicated by cameos – in Dead Boy Detectives you can see Kirby Howell-Baptiste, who, like in The Sandman, played the merciful Death, and Donna Preston in the role of Despair.

Tom Sturridge Didn't Even Know His Co-Stars Were in The Spin-Off

One person viewers didn't see in the new series was Tom Sturridge in the role of Dream. It turns out that not only did the actor not appear in the spin-off, he did not even notice that his colleagues left the set to participate in Dead Boy Detectives.

After Kirby was asked about her cameo in the new series during an interview with EW, Sturridge said:

“I didn’t know you did this. [...] It feels…kinda weird.”

The actress admitted that she had to sneak off to Canada for exactly one day to film scenes with her participation for Dead Boy Detectives. So don't be embarrassed if you don't immediately understand all the intricacies of large fantasy universes. Even if this universe consists of only two series so far, as in the case of Tom Sturridge.
