This Upcoming Disney Remake Can Easily Steal Little Mermaid's Spotlight
This story is definitely worthy of being made into a live-action movie.
Moana is the story of the daughter of a Polynesian chieftain from the island of Mata Nui, which captivated audiences in 2016.
The film received critical acclaim for its animation, music, and empowering message: the female lead embarks on a journey to save her island and discover her own identity.
And here, after 7 years, Disney finally announced the remake of the beloved story.
Until that day, nothing much was known about the remake. We only knew that Dwayne Johnson would reprise his role as the rambunctious demigod Maui and would also serve as a producer, while Auliʻi Cravalho, the original voice of Moana, would be involved as an executive producer.
Now, the project is gaining momentum as new details, including the director, are revealed, making the Moana live-action remake even more exciting for fans.
The chair of the director will be taken by Thomas Kail, known for directing the musicals Hamilton and In The Heights.
With his successful track record in theater, including the acclaimed Hamilton, which he directed both on and off Broadway and for which he received a Tony Award, Kail's involvement brings excitement and great potential to the remake.
Although the news of the Moana live-action movie was initially met with criticism, it is commonplace for Disney remakes. While many fans see Disney's live-action projects as a source of cash grabs, they still manage to tug at the heartstrings of fans and provide a bittersweet moment of nostalgia.
With The Lion King and now The Little Mermaid’s success story, Moana could become the highest-grossing Disney remake in history.
When we see the old favorite names in the list of people involved in the remake process and a very prominent musical director for some reason, we feel that this story can get a great fresh perspective.
If the Moana remake captures the same magic and energy of the animation, it could exceed expectations and become one of Disney's best live-action adaptations.
