This show will make you cry and laugh at the same time.

Netflix has released a comedy detective series starring Ted Danson, A Man on the Inside, about a mole in a nursing home. And the show's life-affirming sentimentality and gentle humor are hard to resist.

What Is A Man on the Inside About?

Retired Charles, a former engineering teacher, has been living on autopilot since the death of his wife, who suffered from dementia. And when his daughter convinces him to find a project or hobby, he responds to an ad in the newspaper about the need for an investigative assistant, a man between the ages of 75 and 85.

As it turns out, private investigator Julie has been hired by a wealthy client: his mother, who lives in a luxurious nursing home Pacific View, has had her family jewel – a ruby necklace – stolen. Julie's idea is to send a mole there.

A Man on the Inside Is Based on The Mole Agent

If the story sounds vaguely familiar, it's because it was told a few years ago in a Chilean documentary called The Mole Agent, which went on to great success and made the Oscar shortlist.

The Netflix adaptation was written by Michael Schur, one of the leading comedy writers in television today, best known to fans of The Office as Dwight Schrute's eccentric cousin Mose.

A Man on the Inside Is the Sweetest Comedy Show of the Year

A Man on the Inside is a bit like Only Murders in the Building, although there isn't much in common except for the age group of the main characters. The detective line is purely symbolic here, without it the plot would fall apart, but nobody cares about the necklace, and the stakes are extremely low.

But this is the sweetest show of the season. The elderly residents of Pacific View are visited by Ted Danson, who can give anyone a second youth. Anyway, the residents are doing fine.

Since they are mostly women, the appearance of an elegant, gray-haired stranger who, as one of them wistfully notes, is able to get around without a walker, causes a bit of a stir. As for the few men, Charles quickly finds a common language with one over backgammon, and another calls him his rival.

A Man on the Inside Is a Perfect Mix of Humor and Touching Moments

The authors skillfully balance humor and sincerity. Most of the comic situations are related to how enthusiastically the main character gets used to his new role as a spy, dictating endless reports to the center.

Ted Danson is a 100% perfect cast. Self-deprecating, slightly pompous, but at the same time relaxed manner, the ability to instantly win everyone over, a lively interest in the eyes – all these features of the traditional Danson image came in handy here.

Despite a number of tragic events and the constant theme of loneliness, this is a very fairy-tale version of old age – with an all-understanding headmistress, dancing, an open bar and a picturesque view from the window.
