It's hard to imagine the series without her.

At first, The Big Bang Theory started with a set of five characters, the main ones being Sheldon, Leonard, and Penny, with Raj and Hovard as on-and-off friends.

However, as the seasons went on and more storylines were explored, more characters were brought in to shake things up.

Not all of them were meant to stay as long as they did. Amy Farrah Fowler, brilliantly portrayed by Mayim Bialik, was not meant to last more than one episode.

His character was written to be a perfect match for Sheldon, and they were supposed to meet on a dating app with a profile his friends created for him.

The story was fun and silly, just like the rest of them, and should have ended at the end of Season 3.

But the writers, actors, and fans saw a rare opportunity to explore Sheldon's more vulnerable side through this character, and they stuck with it.

Both showrunner Steve Molaro and Jim Parsons, who portrays Sheldon Cooper, shared a deeper look into their perspective on Amy's character in the book The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series.

Molaro admitted to being in the dark about where the relationship between Sheldon and Amy will go, but is hopeful that they will be able to create something meaningful. It took a while to get rid of the stereotypical "Female Sheldon" description, but it was worth the time in the end.

Jim Parsons, for his part, was even more certain about Bialik's character:

"At some point in Season 4 — I don't know if something caused it or not — I remember saying to Todd [Spiewak, his husband], 'I will not let this character go without a fight.' That was notable for me, only in that I almost never disagreed with the writers," he wrote.

Fortunately, there was no real need for a fight, and at some point during Season 4, Mayim Bialik was offered a series regular contract, which she accepted.

If you're up for a Big Bang Theory marathon, you can stream all seasons of the show on Netflix or MAX.
