Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw play spies who prevent the end of the world.

The UK continues to be the main supplier of action-packed projects with an instantly recognizable style. At the end of the year, Netflix released the six-episode Black Doves – a series with excellent humor, seductive intrigue and virtuoso action.

The show's main asset is the authenticity of human relationships. The characters are emotionally burned-out partners for whom the profession has become a curse and practically destroyed their personal lives.

What Is Black Doves About?

Helen Webb is the wife of the Secretary of State for Defence and leads a double life. For many years, the woman has been working for the underground organization Black Doves – its members seek out state secrets and sell them to customers who are willing to pay more for the information than others.

When unknown assailants kill Helen's lover, she decides to take revenge with the help of her best friend, the mercenary Sam. At the same time, foreign policy is falling apart: China accuses the intelligence services of Britain and the US of involvement in the death of its ambassador.

The two are forced to prevent escalation from all sides and keep their sanity during the Christmas holidays.

Black Doves Has a Brilliant Cast

Keira Knightley also produced the show – the actress is very comfortable in a modern setting without an abundance of corsets and puffy dresses. She combines high drama with hand-to-hand combat and confidently paints a portrait of a woman going through a midlife crisis.

Her on-screen chemistry with Ben Whishaw is undeniable: he has already tried his hand at the genre and once again brilliantly plays a broken, silent, champagne-loving melancholic over 40.

The queen of British prime-time television Sarah Lancashire holds the second plan in the role of Reed – a calculating leader of the Black Doves who plays on the feelings of her charges.

Black Doves Focuses Less on Geopolitical Issues and More on Personal Relationships

The plot of the series is similar to its predecessors, the spy series Slow Horses and The Day of the Jackal. But in this project, geopolitics serve only as a backdrop to highlight the psychological collisions.

Christmas London with shades of Love Actually also creates an entourage – looking for killers among snowmen is much more fun. The happy ending does not imply a second season, but Netflix has already announced that the next chapter of Black Doves will not be long in coming, and the authors have plenty of options to continue the story.
