Fans love a House of the Dragon theory. And why not? Literally anything could happen – and often does.

And one of the wildest rumours currently circulating is that the father of Helaena's children is not her brother, Aegon (her husband) – but her other brother, Aemond.

Certainly, earlier in the inaugural season of the show, Aegon indicates that he's not entirely on board with the idea of marrying his sister when discussing the possibility with Aemon.

Add this fact to the suggestion that Aemond appears to have a thing for Helaena, and you can see where the theory has come from – especially now that all three are fully mature.

Now, it's not entirely clear where the rumour started, but it's certainly taken off and is getting plenty of traction online

Alleged proof of its truth is the idea that Helaena's sons say "Aemond" in a scene in which Alicent calls Otto "Father". Tenuous? Just a bit.

Further 'evidence' comes from a scene that sees Aemond standing in front of Helena to protect her. During this moment, she places her hand on Aemond's arm. Is any further proof needed? I mean, in any situation, this would feel like a stretch. But think about it; scared sister places her hand on brother's arm. It's hardly a scandal, is it?

Of course, not all fans believe the theory. Indeed, some say they have yet to see any evidence of it. Certainly, if it does prove to be true, any clues we have so far been given are subtle enough that we're not yet supposed to know for certain that it is.

And it's been pointed out by some that Fire & Blood (the book on which the series is based) has an unreliable narrator. Naturally, that gives the writers freedom to veer away from canon. But it by no means says that they have to. And it presents multiple opportunities to create new aspects of the story – so why get so fixated on this one?

Perhaps because it will make an interesting twist – if proven to be true.

Just to clarify, in the book, Aemon does not sleep with his sister or father her children. And, to date, very little has come to light in House of the Dragon to suggest that he's going to do so in the show. But hey, it makes for a nice theory, so let's not knock it.

And if it is revealed to be true, a few of us will just have to admit we didn't see the 'signs'.
