Yep, this unlikely character is actually the central one.

Friends is an ensemble series, where each of the six characters at the core of the show can be called the main character. There are Ross, Rachel, Monica, Joey, Phoebe, and Chandler. And at different points of the show, it seems like each of them is in their own spotlight.

However, even though there are six main characters at the same time, fans still want to analyze the show a little deeper and find the one key character of the show that holds the group together.

Many viewers say without thinking that this character is Rachel, and they have some valid points. For example, she is the one who hits the show like a hurricane and changes her life as well as the lives of the other five people in the gang.

Other fans claim that Monica is indeed the "glue" — they all hang out at her apartment all the time, she is basically the mom of the group. Still, it is not enough. That's why we think the real main character who holds the show together is... Chandler.

Hear us out. The general narration of the story seems to come from the perspective of Matthew Perry 's character, as he sets the sarcastically comedic tone of the whole series. Chandler's character appears to be the most relatable for viewers: he hates his job, he is insecure, but he still believes in a bright future.

Chandler is actually the only character who doesn’t have any major flaws (smoking is not it). His character has gone through a lot of changes from season 1 to the final chapter. And while many fans can say that Rachel has become a better person too, Chandler is still the only one whose growth feels natural and not forced by other life circumstances.

His arc is the best written: he starts out as a deeply traumatized man-child, and the writers don’t just make him ignore all that stuff and magically heal, but they allow him to go through it and resolve everything. He even reconciles with both of his parents.

And the most interesting part: even the statistics prove our theory. Chandler has turned out to be the winner when it comes to the total number of screen appearances, beating even Ross and Rachel (via Let the Machines Learn). Well, that means something, right?
