Happy! TV series starring Christopher Meloni only lasted two seasons, but it is definitely worth at least checking out because of how insane it is.

Summary:

  • Happy! TV series is one of the most unusual Christmas-themed projects you can enjoy during the holidays
  • Combining great characters, brutal action along with both hilarious and scary moments, it may prove to be worth your time
  • Unfortunately, the show was canceled early due to low ratings, and hardly anyone remembers it today

Christmas is the perfect time to enjoy some appropriately themed movies and shows, and a myriad of such projects have been released over the years, allowing everyone to find something to their taste.

However, the vast majority of them are more or less the same, and while the iconic Christmas classics have earned their legendary status, watching them over and over again can eventually bore even the most die-hard fans.

Of course, there are now plenty of other projects that offer a very different take on the holiday, ranging from black comedy to chilling horror, but some of them manage to stand out from the rest, like a certain undeservedly forgotten TV gem.

Happy! Features One Of The Craziest Christmas Stories Ever

The Happy! TV series debuted in 2017 and was a truly bizarre take on the Christmas spirit, combining live action, animation, dark humor, and some seriously brutal action scenes.

It stars Christopher Meloni, who you may know from his many big screen and television appearances, albeit mostly in supporting roles, as Nick Sax, an ex-cop who abuses alcohol and other substances and now works as a hitman to make ends meet.

After Nick suffers a near-fatal heart attack, he begins to see Happy, a cartoonish winged unicorn voiced by Patton Oswalt, who explains that he is an imaginary friend of a girl, Hailey, who has been kidnapped by a maniac dressed as Santa Claus and urges Sax to find and rescue her.

Naturally, at first Nick is not too thrilled about a little blue horse flying around, believing that he has actually gone insane, and is more concerned with his own dire situation, as his death was ordered by a mafia family because he had become aware of their dirty secret.

Eventually, he comes to terms with the fact that Happy actually exists and is not a product of his drug and alcohol warped mind, which sets him on a quest to save Hailey and deal with anyone foolish enough to get in his way.

In addition to the outstandingly memorable and well-acted characters, as Nick is definitely one of the most hilariously unhinged roles in Christopher Meloni's entire career, and the crazy setup, the first season also features some impressive and gory action along with legitimately scary scenes.

The Show's Uniqueness Led To Its Downfall

While all of this makes Happy! not for everyone, and definitely not suitable to watch with children around, if you decide to give it a chance, you might really enjoy it, as season 1 is a perfectly self-contained story set during Christmas.

As for the show's second (and final) season, which was released in 2019 and centered around Easter, it's still pretty decent, though maybe not as great as its predecessor, and features more of Nick and Happy's insane adventures.

Unfortunately, despite teasing a Halloween-themed third season at the end of season two, the show was canceled due to being pretty niche and too weird for the average viewer, which led to low ratings.

Since then, there has been no information about a possible revival of the show, much to the chagrin of fans, making it unlikely that Happy! will ever return.

But if the above hasn't put you off, now might be the perfect time to check out this forgotten TV gem, or just refresh your memories.
