Why bother giving meaning to the stories?

Lost is a show that has a lot of controversy around it, and is sometimes even referred to as the most complicated series ever. But that’s not always a good thing to have a status like that. After all, there were a lot of stories that were called “complicated” but were simply impossible to understand.

And that's not because it was written too smartly or anything. It's mostly because it didn't make sense.

One of such stories happened in season 2 of the show and was connected to Michael, played by Harold Perrineau. Remember when he betrayed the rest of the survivors?

At the end of season 1 he, together with his son Walt, Sawyer and Jin tried to escape from the island using a raft. They wanted to get help and come back to save the others, but instead of that they ended up losing Walt to The Others.

Well, that made Michael go insane and turn into this maniacal character who went from being a team player to a totally desperate madman willing to kill and betray anyone in his path. It almost felt like the writers were trying their best to make him the most hated character on the show. And frankly, they succeeded.

Michael killed Ana Lucia, then he shot Libby, all for no reason. He made a deal with the Others to betray all of his island friends just to get Walt. Yes, it was all portrayed as an act of desperation, but wasn't that a bit too much? After all, the fans didn't even buy it.

“Michael never seems to care about Walt in the sense that he actually cares about Walt as a person, he always sees him as this abstract concept of My Son and his actions always struck me as more egotistical than loving,” Redditor FortunaRedux said.

At the end of season 2, he finally gets his son as part of that infamous deal, but he becomes the most annoying character that nobody wants anything to do with. But what was the reason for that insane character twist?

Among the many crazy stories the show has introduced us to, this one will always be remembered as a huge question mark in the minds of fans.
