This David Corenswet-Led Horror Will Set You Up for the New Superman Movie
If you were curious about the new Superman star’s performance, look no further than this 92%-rated modern classic horror.
While we may very much not understand the need to recast Henry Cavill with David Corenswet for the new Superman movie, we do recognize the new Man of Steel star’s acting chops. For many people, Corenswet is still a dark horse, but thankfully, there’s a perfect movie to get a good look at his performance… As long as you don’t mind being covered in grime and guts through the screen, that is.
Pearl’s Story Is Downright Harrowing
America, 1918, a small farm isolated from the outer world to avoid the Spanish Flu. A young woman called Pearl is struggling with her obligations to her demanding mother, paralyzed father, and off-to-war husband.
She’s mentally unstable, psychotic, and wants to live the fancy life she sees in the movies instead of staying on the farm in the middle of nowhere caring for people she doesn’t love.
Once Pearl falls in love with a local town’s projectionist and decides to pursue an acting career, she starts seeing her family as an obstacle. A sadistic psychopath by nature, Pearl gets into one conflict after another as she demolishes her past life, but the people she called her friends and lovers don’t take kindly to her methods… And thus they, too, become obstacles for her. Meanwhile, her husband comes back.
David Corenswet Was Great in Pearl
Directed by Ti West, Pearl saw an overwhelmingly positive critical response, and viewers loved it, too. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie boasts 92 and 82% Critic and Audience Scores, respectively, somewhat supported by its 7/10 IMDb score. Gory, brutal, and insane to the core, Pearl is as disturbing and unsettling as it should be.
Mia Goth, the Pearl lead star, is unanimously praised for her stunning performance, and she also co-wrote the screenplay. David Corenswet, who portrays the projectionist Pearl falls in love with, also delivers a great act, though overshadowed by that of his co-star. But if you’re curious to see the future Superman in action, Pearl is our top tip: it’s fun, wild, gory, and as dark as they come. If that’s your thing.
You can watch Pearl on Netflix and Prime Video.
