This Criminally Underrated Better Call Saul Character Deserves More Fan Love
Who is the best and most overlooked attorney in Better Call Saul?
Better Call Saul is a TV show with too many great characters. Of course, the main ones usually overshadow minor characters, and that’s why fans of the show believe that some characters don’t get enough recognition.
One name that probably doesn’t ring a bell as loudly as it should has recently been brought up on Reddit — Richard Schweikart, portrayed by Dennis Boutsikaris.
Co-founder and name partner of Schweikart & Cokely, and an attorney for Sandpiper Crossing, Rich has been a subtle yet significant presence throughout the series.
Richard went from enduring hazing rituals during his early years at a Boston law firm to establishing Schweikart & Cokely. His ascent in the Albuquerque legal scene, marked by making acquaintances with notable lawyers like Charles McGill, Howard Hamlin, and Clifford Main, proves that he is a professional.
But why is he overlooked? Fans believe that Rich’s interactions with the series' central characters, particularly Jimmy McGill (later known as Saul Goodman) and Kim Wexler, have been understated yet significant.
His professional courtesy, evident in his dealings with Jimmy over the Sandpiper Crossing case, is what makes him a great character. One of the standout aspects of Rich is his ability to recognize and value talent. For example, he admired Kim Wexler’s tenacity and dedication.
Even when faced with challenges and disputes, Rich’s interactions with Kim reveal a man who is not only a seasoned professional but also a mentor figure.
Despite not being at the forefront of the series, Rich’s presence has been a steady constant, contributing to pivotal moments and enhancing the overall narrative. Rich’s character embodies a true legal professional, balancing ethics with ambition.
Fun fact: there is a character of the same name, Richard Schweikart, in the 1951 German drama film, The Call of the Sea. However, the movie isn’t that popular, so it's kind of surprising they'd use that name as a reference in Better Call Saul. But who knows.
While Richard Schweikart may not be the first name that springs to mind when you think of Better Call Saul, he’s a well-written character that deserves appreciation, especially given his minor role.
