The bias toward Sheldon is ridiculous.

Summary:

  • Young Sheldon is a prequel to another hit CBS sitcom, The Big Bang Theory.
  • It explores the relationship within the family of Sheldon Cooper.
  • While Sheldon was coddled by his parents as a special needs child, his siblings Georgie and Missy were more often than not neglected.

Young Sheldon is considered one of the best sitcoms on television, depicting the life of an average American family in Texas in the 90s. It is realistic, it is slightly nostalgic, and it is hilarious to watch, but it also provokes a lot of discussion about the main characters and their relationships with each other as part of a family.

While the show was originally created to explore the origins of The Big Bang Theory's character Sheldon Cooper (which it still does), it turned out that viewers were more interested in pretty much everyone else but the titular character.

Once the show established that Sheldon hadn't changed much from his younger self, and was just as entitled and annoying as he was as an adult, interest in him suddenly waned. As good as Iain Armitage's portrayal and Jim Parsons' narration were, it was the other members of the family who caught the audience's attention.

Especially his siblings, Missy and George Jr.

What Happens To Georgie Cooper?

One of the three siblings who always seems to be left out of the conversation is the eldest, Georgie. While Missy gets her fair share of attention simply by being Sheldon's twin sister, and then rebelling against parental neglect later in the series, her older brother does not seem to have the same ability.

If anything, Georgie has become a metaphorical punching bag for both of his parents, while the viewers are left to watch. Although he's a smart kid who seems to understand his own position in the family, his desires, and his plans, this maturity works against him half the time, as he's left to his own devices.

His premature marriage and Mandy's pregnancy weren't acts of rebellion, but honest mistakes made out of a lack of guidance.

When he makes age-appropriate mistakes, his family tends to overreact by judging him too harshly or calling him too many names. When he gets stuck, he doesn't feel like he has enough of a support system for the people around him. Of course, those who have watched The Big Bang Theory know how successful he was in the end.

Georgie gets his happy ending, and considering how he was raised, that is a true miracle. But the price he had to pay was much higher than it could have been, and he has his family to blame.

If you want to see how Georgie's story ends in the final season of Young Sheldon, you can tune in to CBS for the premiere episode on February 15, 2024.
