It's not news that someone has to leave every now and then, but who exactly will it be this time?

Spring is always a time of change for television as it plans for the new season.

It's a time of anxiety for some current shows in danger of being canceled, and a time of hope for pilots as networks consider which shows to pick up in the fall.

But for long-running shows, it almost always means losing some characters in upcoming seasons. Mostly because their contracts are up, but also because of some plot changes.

So when it comes to Grey's Anatomy, that's the deal. It was mentioned in Deadline that the contracts of several actors are coming to an end.

For example Kevin McKidd who plays Owen Hunt, Kim Raver who plays Teddy Atlman, Camilla Luddington who plays Jo Wilson and Caterina Scorsone who plays Amelia Shepherd.

Their contracts expire at the end of season 19, and they still don't have new contracts for next season.

Actually, this is not the best news for the drama because the list of characters that the show is about to lose is actually quite long. And some fans are afraid that this will cause major ratings problems.

But Grey's Anatomy is a type of show with an ever-changing cast.

And a number of circumstances, from the death of characters to the departure of actors, have created a long-running drama with quite a bit of cast turnover.

Actually, only Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. have been on the show from day one and never left, even temporarily.

The show once even took a risk and parted ways with its main star Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey, for quite some time.

The series tried to fill that void by throwing lots of new interns at viewers, a formula that has had some mixed results, but one that has been successful enough in the ratings to guarantee that all of the interns will be back next year.

So, if the writers are creative enough to make a successful show without the lead actor, maybe they can find a way to deal with a greater loss of quantity but less of quality.
