Because his present life is a much more compelling thing to wait for on the screen anyway.

It’s been a couple of truly wild days for Shrek fans, who were left with two major news promising exciting new installments in the franchise.

The movie’s next part, a fourth sequel that doesn’t have an official title yet, has been announced alongside an upcoming spinoff about Shrek’s quirky friend Donkey, whose storyline at some point may seem to be even more intriguing than Shrek’s serene family life in the swamp that he’s always dreamed about.

Despite many fans claiming that there was no real need for Donkey’s spinoff (really?), I’m more than thrilled to have my fingers crossed for a big mystery about the beloved character finally unveiling, though my personal dream has nothing to do with Donkey’s past.

Now that Shrek and all of its following movies have been pretty indifferent towards Donkey’s family life, it feels like he deserves to give a closer look at his and the Dragon’s marriage in the future spinoff.

I dare say that Donkey’s dragon-donkey hybrid babies have always had an unfairly brief appearance while Shrek and Fiona’s ogre babies were featured way too often.

The upcoming spinoff better not disappoint in this case since another mysterious part of Donkey’s life doesn’t need that much attention for one simple reason, which is unnecessary sadness inserted into the franchise.

Since Shrek’s very first movie, it’s been pretty clear that Donkey’s life before meeting his ogre friend wasn’t that nice and easy. The first installment released back in 2001 revealed that the character had a tough time changing owners, being dragged to numerous fairs and traded just because he had a magical ability to talk.

The theory about Donkey being yet another victim of Pleasure Island which is featured in the 1940 Disney movie Pinocchio sounds pretty much compelling, yet it’s still not enough to dwell on in a potentially an hour and a half long film.

However, fans like me do have hope in Shrek’s new spinoff since DreamWorks did a really good job with Puss in Boots taking the viewers back in time and recounting the brave cat’s entire story. They don’t have to do the same with Donkey though, but the idea is clear.
