There's Only One Sandman Character Casting Fans Are Really Disappointed About
You probably didn't expect people to be upset about this one.
It turns out that there is a surprising casting decision in The Sandman that has left some people disappointed - and we're not even talking about Death or Desire.
The character that has upset some people is... Matthew the Raven.
Matthew is voiced by Patton Oswald, and although we don't technically see the actor, the way he sounds seems a little out of character, according to some fans.
Given a Chance, Gaiman Wouldn't Have Cast Bowie as The Sandman's Lucifer
One Redditor said that when they thought of Matthew, they always imagined "a rougher voice".
"I'm a fan of Patton, but his voice is just too jolting and recognizable, and it sort of ruins the immersion for me," another Redditor noted.
Because of Patton's distinctive voice, people no longer perceive the raven as Matthew; they can't help but hear Patton. Some people have even had their headcanons ruined.
"This almost took me out of it when he opened his mouth. I am a Patton fan but this was not a good fit in my opinion. And to my horror when I was reading the Corinthian nightmare country comic and Matthew came in all I could hear was Patton and I was fighting the air," Redditor DigitalBathWaves recalled.
Although The Sandman was generally well received by audiences, the casting of the show was controversial. Because the cast is so diverse, the showrunners have had to deal with accusations of "wokeness". However, even the author of the original comic books and executive producer of the show, Neil Gaiman, has spoken out to refute the claims and refer those frustrated by the diversity to the canon.
Recently, the show was finally given the green light for a second season.
The first season of The Sandman is available to stream on Netflix.
