The Winchesters Mid-Finale Shamelessly Throws in a Heartbreaking Destiel Parallel
Destiel shippers were definitely not ready for that mid-finale.
Warning: the following article contains spoilers for The Winchesters episode 7
Ahead of a several weeks-long hiatus, The Winchesters went out with a bang, delivering not only a plot twist with its main villain but also a parallel that Destiel shippers could not have left unnoticed.
First of all; yes, it turns out that Men of Letters' box does not kill monsters but rather transports them, and the Akrida is basically a hivemind with a queen on top.
The Winchesters: John and Mary's Chemistry Goes Up in Flames
At some point, when the hunters realize their mistake, it's almost too late: as the Akrida closes in on John and Mary, they are trapped in the toom with a door too weak to hold the enemy back. Facing imminent death, the two finally confess their feelings and share a kiss... and it's almost like we have already seen something like that before.
Surely, Destiel shippers were quick to remember the scene from Supernatural season 15 episode 18, in which Castiel also confessed his love to Dean — but was taken by The Empty too soon to receive any response, let alone a kiss, from the hunter.
For some fans, The Winchesters mid-finale scene was a wink from executive producer Jensen Ackles, with one Twitter fan believing that the parallel was a way for "Dean himself" to show the viewers "what he wishes for when he thinks of that moment."
Another fan noted that "making a destiel kiss explicitly endorsed by sheer parallel willpower through the medium of dean's parents' relationship is good and honest work actually."
Others, however, don't really feel like celebrating.
"Straight couples know each other for mere weeks and get trapped in a room once and get to kiss on the cw. Big Destiel is 11 years strong and withering away like spn lip gloss budget," Twitter user sunnycastiel said.
The big John/Mary moment is likely to become yet another parallel Destiel shippers are carefully collecting to use as a confirmation of their favorite pairing. With the original show never actually delivering any kind of closure to fans, this is what shippers have to resort for, even though some people argue that the mid-finale parallel was nothing short of a "simple wink to generate fanservice".
Either way, the Winchesters' fans will have more than a month to decipher the episode and come out with even more fan theories before the Supernatural prequel returns to The CW.
The Winchesters are set to come back with episode 8 on January 24. The first season will consist of 13 episodes.
