The Walking Dead’s Daryl Dixon Introduces The Worst Kind of Zombies So Far
Will Daryl face his most horrifying enemy in the upcoming spinoff?
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is a highly anticipated spinoff of the original series. A recently released 10-minute sneak peek unveiled a shocking and horrifying new threat — acid walkers in France.
These walkers have run into some chemicals or bio-agents that make their skin melt and blood boil. They're a whole new level of gruesome — way beyond anything we've seen in The Walking Dead universe.
The Walking Dead franchise has been introducing variants of zombies to keep the fans engaged. Variants are walkers with some sort of mutation or enhancement, making them different from the normal ones.
For instance, we've seen walkers in The Walking Dead: World Beyond that were so strong and fast that they could smash doors with their fists. The later seasons of the original show also featured a couple of variants.
Daryl is no rookie. He's been surviving this apocalypse for years and is one of the toughest fighters. Zombies, humans — doesn't matter the threat, Daryl’s got it handled. But acid walkers? That’s something new, even for him.
In an interview with TV Insider, the show’s executive producer Greg Nicotero referred to this new kind of walkers as "burners."
He explained, “These zombies have mutated to a point where if they touch or bite you or their blood gets on you, it burns you significantly. It changes all the rules.”
The burners that Daryl encounters in his first episode might be stronger variants, but there's a significant chance they are not. There’s a possibility they were changed by various chemicals around them, similar to situations seen in The Walking Dead: Dead City.
In Dead City, we’ve seen a “rat king” walker that was basically several walkers stuck in each other. This kind of walker is not supposed to be considered a variant. So, those new walkers we got a glimpse of might turn out to be something like that.
We will find out the truth really soon as The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is expected to be released on September 10, 2023 on AMC and AMC+.
