Why is Rick nowhere near as bad as Negan?

Negan, one of the most menacing villains of The Walking Dead, is often compared to the show’s protagonist, Rick Grimes. Some fans tend to believe that they are not really different.

Fans engaged in a Reddit discussion, doubting the idea that Rick is anywhere near comparable to Negan. Before we get all judgy, let's consider the contexts in which these characters operate.

First thing we need to understand is that Negan went through this whole redemption arc, which is also a part of the new TWD spinoff called The Walking Dead: Dead City.

But let's be real, no matter how much good he's done since then, we can't just brush off all the messed up stuff he did in the past.

Rick shows us what it takes to survive and adapt in a messed-up world, while Negan challenges our ideas of good and evil. But some fans argue that Rick's transformation throughout the series has taken him down a darker path.

However, can you come up with anything that Rick has done that can be compared to raping women, killing someone with an iron, burning a man alive, and many other ugly things that Negan actually did? Definitely not.

Rick's leadership style is all about protecting his group and trying to create a better world. He only resorts to violence when he really has to, and his decisions are always about keeping his loved ones safe and building a community where people work together.

Negan is a whole different story. He rules with an iron fist and loves to scare the crap out of everyone. Negan’s best friends are power and control. He uses fear and intimidation to maintain his position.

Rick may have made some tough choices, but Negan takes pleasure in causing pain and suffering. He is a sadist, and it is a fact.

Rick is almost always about doing what's right, and Negan... well, he's not exactly a saint. They both make choices based on their circumstances, which can be morally complex. It's a reminder that life isn't always black and white, especially in a post-apocalyptic setting, but it doesn’t mean that these two are the same.
