Did the Governor kill that gang from season 1?

Something that still makes fans wonder about The Walking Dead even after its conclusion is what happened to the Vatos gang from season 1, those tough-looking guys who turned out to be the good guys, protecting a nursing home full of elderly residents in Atlanta.

There is a deleted scene from season 2, where it is revealed that the entire group was gone. And not just gone — they were murdered. Not by walkers, but by humans.

This led to a fan theory suggesting that the Governor could've done such a thing. We know he's capable of such acts, as seen in season 3. Plus, he found Merle in Atlanta, so it's possible he crossed paths with the Vatos gang.

Could he have seen them as a threat and decided to eliminate them? Or maybe he wanted their supplies? It's all speculation, but it's fun to think about. While the Vatos never made it to season 2, and it was never implied that the Governor killed them, there is one scene that might confirm this theory.

The moment in question is a scene from season 1. In that scene, our group is in a tight spot because the Vatos have taken Glenn captive, but Rick's group has one of the Vatos as well.

If you watch closely, you might notice that one of the Vatos, — the one who is holding Glenn on the roof, — is actually Shumpert, who we later meet as one of the Governor's right-hand people in the third season.

This adds a different angle to the idea that the Governor killed the Vatos. It's possible he gave them a chance to give up initially. Those who said no might have been killed, while those who agreed might have joined the Governor. Shumpert might be one of those who said yes (or maybe the only one).

While it’s a great detail that makes the theory even more intriguing, the simple explanation might be that it's just a case of the show reusing an actor. Travis Love portrayed both of these characters; and yes, those are probably two different characters.

Travis Love’s role was way bigger when he became the Governor’s henchman, but his appearance as the Vatos' gang member in season 1 is so brief, one could actually forget he was there.
