Viewers still have too vivid a memory of the showrunner's mistakes in previous projects.

A TV response to the popularity of Twilight, The Vampire Diaries was based on a series of novels by L. J. Smith that were written and published long before Stephenie Meyer's books. The Vampire Diaries begins as a story about a high school girl who becomes the object of affection for two vampire brothers, one "good" and one "bad."

However, the series quickly moves beyond this simple love triangle to become an epic adventure with many characters, unexpected plot twists, and more than just bloodsucking monsters.

Like Twilight, Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec's project romanticizes the image of the vampire, turning him into a sensual hero who suffers from his own mental inferiority complex. However, the relationship between Elena, Stefan and Damon, due to the lack of clear development points, eventually slides into an endless soap opera.

In 2013, The Vampire Diaries got a spin-off series, The Originals, a show about the very first vampires in the world; and later in 2018, another sequel was released – Legacies.

Recently, in a new interview, Julie Plec reignited the fan debate by stating that another project in the Vampire Diaries universe is possible:

“Yeah, I have a story I still want to tell. [...] I'm sure Warner Bros. has plenty of stories they want to tell. So, the hope is they'll give me the opportunity to do it again. So, we'll see.”

Vampire Diaries Fans Are Fed Up with Julie Plec

And while it's always nice to return to a beloved universe, fans are not too excited about the news – and in particular about the fact that Julie Plec will likely be at the helm of the new project.

“I can only hope it’s nothing of the supernatural type again, not only has she exhausted the subject, but seeing how morbidly atrocious she flopped with legacies, i don’t wanna see another disney- like supernatural fairy tale,” Reddit user likely_isaabella wrote.

Criticism of Julie Plec's writing decisions began back in the days of the original series, when storylines started to lead to nothing, characters did illogical things, and the series gradually turned into a plot hole on a plot hole. And the criticism did not die down with the release of both spin-offs.

Fans still love Mystic Falls, but Julie Plec's participation became a red rag for many viewers, and such a reaction, as sad as it is to admit, is pretty justified.
