Fans call out the Vampire Diaries writers for one storyline involving Katherine Pierce, saying it is a really big plot hole.

Katherine Pierce, one of the main antagonists of The Vampire Diaries, was a very complex and intriguing character with some interesting storylines.

It was probably the most challenging role for Nina Dobrev, but her hard work clearly paid off because clever, tricky, and somewhat vulnerable Katherine was a pure joy to watch and became one of the favorite characters in the supernatural series. Fans felt like Katherine was the realest, most relatable charaсter with the best development and overall subplot.

However, despite all the amazing storylines Katherine had, there were some plot holes that made her arc a lot weaker than it could be. The biggest inconsistency that comes to almost every fan's mind when thinking about the Vampire Diaries plot holes is the time when Katherine put herself in Elena's body and nobody noticed.

"I can never get past this plot hole because Bonnie literally saw Katherine while she was close to death before they took her to the hospital," one of the distraught fans wrote on Reddit.

All fans noted that it was very strange and unbelievable that Bonnie, being the literal anchor to the other side that all supernatural beings must pass through upon dying, did not notice or wonder why Katherine never passed through her after she died. It felt even more weird considering Katherine had come very close to passing through her just a couple of episodes before. Katherine also behaved very not Elena-like while being in her body, but not a single character noticed this.

"After all of the times that Katherine has impersonated Elena, wouldn't they come up with some code word or question to ask if they were at all suspicious?" one of the fans wondered.

This plot hole was so big and widely discussed that even the creators addressed it. Showrunner Julie Plec said at the ATV Festival panel discussion that they decided to leave it up to the ambiguous nature of Katherine's human/supernatural status since she was human when she died, but also doppelganger and Traveler (via Enstarz).

"They didn't really give an explanation and instead they're just hoping the viewers don't call them on it?" a fan commented. "That's lazy and sloppy."
