Katherine Pierce is one of the most fascinating yet terrifying characters in The Vampire Diaries' history.

Storylines involving her have undoubtedly captivated audiences around the globe. After all, her charm is undeniable – she's manipulative, strong, selfish, yet vulnerable, all at the same time. However, there are some moments in the hit series where things just don't add up, no matter how you spin it. And this one plot hole is so huge that the fandom is still talking about it to this day.

Plot holes are not uncommon when it comes to shows like TVD, which ran for nearly nine years. From compulsion confusion to the amount of cure one has to take to transition, fans have noticed a number of plot holes throughout the years involving many different characters, and Katherine Pierce is no exception.

But the biggest plot hole that didn't make any sense to the viewers was when Katherine appeared to have died but, in reality, transmitted herself into Elena's body. There are many issues to discuss here, so buckle up.

First of all, Bonnie should've known Katherine didn't actually die as she should've felt her passing through her to the Other Side. However, in this scene, Bonnie sees Katherine's ghost and acknowledges her death, so after this, it should be the time for her to pass through. That evidently doesn't happen, however, and Katherine proceeds to possess Elena. So, what everyone is confused about is how Bonnie fails to notice something's not right and alert everyone about it.

Of course, we could try to find explanations ourselves and speculate that perhaps Bonnie thought Katherine did die but just didn't move on. However, the writing could have highlighted that more clearly and not left everyone wondering and filling in the gaps.

Secondly, Katherine and Elena are two entirely different people. Most fans will agree that they've never watched a scene where they would be confused over who was who. They have different mannerisms, and Katherine behaves nothing like Elena.

With such clear contrasts, it's hard to believe that no one in Elena's life would notice a single thing or suspect something for so long.

For instance, how did Stefan not think it was strange that "Elena" wanted to give Katherine a funeral and wasn't happy that Stefan wasn't heartbroken about Katherine's death?

To this day, it's unclear what the writers intended to achieve with this storyline. Perhaps they simply wanted to keep Katherine on for longer or create more tension between Damon and Elena. Guess we'll never know!
