The Truth Behind Bridgerton’s Lady Danbury Casting
The most iconic Bridgerton duo could’ve been very different.
Summary:
- Bridgerton is a Netflix romance period drama based on Julia Quinn's novel series of the same name.
- Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury quickly became fan favorites among the secondary characters.
- As revealed by Bridgerton's official Instagram, Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte) initially auditioned for the role of her counterpart.
While Bridgerton's main focus has always been and will continue to be on the Bridgerton siblings themselves and the way their love lives unfold, many great supporting characters are almost as important to the plot. Moreover, the love for them proves to hold almost as much place in the hearts of the audience as the love for the main characters.
Lady Danbury and Queen Charlotte, the iconic duo who have the power to control all of London society, are a great example of such characters. Without them, the show wouldn't be half as fun to watch, and the main characters would have a much harder time finding their purpose.
Of course, a large part of their success is due to the brilliant character portrayals by Golda Rosheuvel and Adjoa Andoh. Rosheuvel's performance as Queen Charlotte led to the development of her character's own arc in the prequel, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
However, things could have gone very differently had Rosheuvel been cast in the role she originally auditioned for.
Who Was Supposed To Play Lady Danbury?
To make up for the long wait that fans now have to endure, the team behind Bridgerton Social has prepared a whole series of activities, including a celebratory re-watch of season 1 of the show on Instagram. After each episode, fans were also given an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the show in the form of BTS images, videos and fun facts.
The information about Golda Rosheuvel's first audition was shared under the same circumstances.
As it turned out, the actress was initially trying out to portray Lady Danbury, who played a major role in the background of season 1's male protagonist, Simon Basset. Although the role later went to Adjoa Andoh, Rosheuvel was asked to audition for Her Majesty the Queen instead.
Fortunately, it worked out very well for both actresses. While they are not central to Bridgerton's romances, they are certainly very important to the show's universe. Their roles shape the characters of the show, and the disappearance of either of them would certainly ruin the dynamic that the show has.
If you want to see more of Golda Rosheuvel and Adjoa Andoh as Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury, and delve deeper into the lore of these characters, you can stream Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story on Netflix.
