Here’s a history lesson you won’t want to skip.

One of the things that people know and love about The Tudors is how highly sexual and violent the show was at times. While some viewers complained that it was too explicit, others found it a perfect way to make history entertaining and the period setting more relatable to modern viewers.

If you enjoyed the edgy scenes in The Tudors, there is another show that will be right up your alley. With only 7 episodes, Starz's latest release, Mary & George, is the perfect late night binge.

Is Mary & George Available in the US?

Mary & George follows the titular character on her journey to gain the wealth and recognition of the aristocracy through King James I. Coming from a humble background, Countess of Buckingham Mary Villers is tired of feeling powerless in her own life, so she decides to conquer the world by ultimately selling her son to the king.

Based on historical figures and real events that took place in England at the end of the 16th century, the show is not afraid to tell the truth, however ugly it may be. This shocking factor that comes into play during the various scenes keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats throughout all 7 episodes of the show until the finale.

Although the show claims to be based on fact, you may want to take everything you see on screen with a pinch of salt. While the show has received generally positive reviews, some historians have complained that the writing exaggerates certain parts of history and changes others to better fit the narrative.

One of the things that makes Mary & George work so well, apart from the fact that it is based on the most scandalous part of British history, is the perfect casting of the series.

No one expected Tony Curran, known to many viewers for his portrayal of Vincent van Gogh in Doctor Who 's most heartbreaking episode, and Red, White and Royal Blue's Nicholas Galitzine to have so much chemistry, but they did. And Julianne Moore's Mary just added spice to the mix. All three definitely did justice to their characters.

The show, which has a 96% fresh critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, has already captured the hearts of many viewers in the U.K., where it was released in early March. Starting April 5th, thanks to Starz, the show will be available for all American viewers to enjoy and make up their own minds.
