Yes, a new season is coming, but are we sure there are no more surprises? (No, we are not).

Recent days have been nothing but celebration for The Sandman fans, with the second season finally being greenlit by Netflix after excruciating four-month-long wait.

However, it looks like there is hope for even more. At least according to Neil Gaiman, the author of the original graphic novel that was adapted by Netflix.

Will Johanna Constantine Return in The Sandman Season 2? Looks Like Yes

Eagle-eyed fans noticed that the season announcement was basically teasing "new episodes," without a particular mention of season 2. The statement is so ambiguous that fans decided to go and ask Gaiman for clarification...

...which he never provided, naturally.

"It is, isn't it," Gaiman noted on Tumblr when one fan noticed how vague the season announcement was. "Probably a good thing."

His response might be just another teaser; after all, Gaiman has been masterfully playing with fans' feelings this whole time. However, this time, the ambiguity can be quite good for the fandom.

"If this means they're moving away from a seasonal model and just doing arcs and stand-alones going forward I think this is great news, trying to force The Sandman into a mold is always going to be a mistake. If it just means that Netflix has committed to more than one season it's still great news," one Redditor noted.

The reason for fans to actually be expecting something more than just another season of The Sandman is right there. After the first season was released, it was followed with a special episode that in fact consisted of two episodes: A Dream of a Thousand Cats and Calliope. The deliberately vague Netflix announcement leaves space for more sweet surprises like that.

"Based off of his response, my guess is they are going to release two or three "between season" specials like how Doctor Who does with its Christmas specials and have Midsummer's Nights Dream and Thermidor episodes out long before season two's Season of Mists and Game of You combined storyline," Redditor Marcusinpaine said.

The premiere date for the new season, as well as its plot details, remains unknown as of now. However, the renewal alone was great news for fans, some of whom were desperate enough to believe that Netflix decided to cancel the show after it spent many weeks in limbo after the August release.

The first season is available for streaming on Netflix.
