The Rookie Season 7 Will Be a Blast for Those Who Hated the Shortened One
Everything is going back to normal.
While surviving the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023 is an accomplishment in itself for any TV show, given how many cuts studios have had to make to stay within their budgets, that's not all that matters to fans. Getting renewed is great, but if the shows aren't ready to bring back the quality of the past, they might as well get canceled.
The Rookie, one of the ABC procedural hits that survived the drama, is already promising its viewers that it will bring back everything they loved about the show, and that's what makes its return in the 2024/25 broadcast season so exciting. Here's what you can expect from season 7 of the show.
Will The Rookie Be Back for Season 7?
According to showrunner Alexi Hawley, The Rookie is about to return to the longer season format, packed with treats for all kinds of viewers. So no matter what you love most about the show, you can be sure that season 7 will cover it, with at least one episode out of 18 planned.
“I do think we’ll go back to being more of a standalone show with serialized elements, because it’s going to be a longer season and I think people really do like that. Also, there are the many different ways we tell stories — whether it’s the big event-type episodes, the more rom-com episodes, or with a big guest star — so it’ll be fun to go back to that,” he said to TVLine.
Compared to the shortened 10-episode season 6 that aired in 2024, the 18-episode run feels much more substantial. Still, it's not a complete return to the way things were for the show. Prior to the events of the strikes, The Rookie aired 20- and 22-episode seasons, with the exception of season 3.
Still, eight more episodes will certainly make up for the lack of time in the last season and allow the story to progress at a reasonable pace. Since The Rookie's John Nolan, played by Nathan Fillion, is no longer a rookie, there is room for more newcomers, so the screen time will come in handy to establish their characters.
If you love The Rookie and are happy to see the show get back to normal after adjusting to the challenges of the industry, be sure to keep an eye out for any news or behind-the-scenes updates on season 7. A new batch of episodes is already being filmed, so the premiere date news may be coming soon!
