'The Rings of Power' Creators Have Five Seasons Planned, But Are Fans Happy?
It's good to have a roadmap when you're planning a long journey, but it would really help to have fans on board as well.
'The Rings of Power ' spin-off definitely does not face a threat of being canceled just before the story reaches its conclusion, as the show's creators revealed to Empire that there is a comprehensive plan for five seasons.
"The rights that Amazon bought were for a 50-hour show. They knew from the beginning that was the size of the canvas – this was a big story with a clear beginning, middle and end. There are things in the first season that don't pay off until Season 5," said showrunner JD Payne.
Good for the team! We now only have to know whether fans are as excited as they are. And it looks like people are really divided on the issue.
"This is where the Star Wars sequels went wrong. They mishmashed two peoples visions and didn’t have a clear roadmap from the start. It was severely lacking – poorly developed new characters can be forgiven but ruining established beloved characters is really unforgiveable," – @messfest10.
While many people fume over lack of the Tolkien spirit in the upcoming show, others are genuinely happy about what's coming.
"I can't wait for this series! I am 40, I was there when the first movies came out, even when the animated was created too. I am SO HYPED. I do hope I like it and they stylishly does not have anything to do with the Wheel of Time, PLEASE," – @GuaridaCinefago.
The step away from John Tolkien's canon can make the show somewhat innovative, certain optimists believe.
According to what Empire learned from the creators, 'The Rings of Power' "will weave a story of Elves, Dwarves, Harfoots and more set against an epic backdrop of major events from the history of Middle-earth – from the forging of the rings, to the rise of Sauron."
But it is not based on any of Tolkien books, as mentioned before, being more of a creator's interpretation of what could have happened long before the events of 'The Lord of the Rings ' and 'The Hobbit' movies. For some fans, this is exactly what is wrong with the series, but it would seem reasonable to first wait until the show premieres on September 2, 2022.
