The Real Reason Behind Spider-Man 2099's Hatred For Miles Morales
The mystery of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse may finally be solved with Miguel O'Hara's backstory.
In the sequel of 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales, the son of an African-American father and a Puerto Rican mother, and another version of the multiple Spider-People embarks on a new adventure that takes him across different dimensions and introduces him to different versions of Spider-Man from alternate realities.
In the new movie, however, not every Spider-Man is as gracious to Miles as his alter-egos from the first film.
In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Miles not only has his worst nemesis, Spot, but also a semi-villain, Spider-Man 2099, to challenge him along the way.
In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Spider- Man 2099's, aka Miguel O'Hara, animosity towards Miles Morales stems from his undisclosed backstory.
As the movie explores the conflict between them, it becomes clear that Miguel's past experiences have shaped his resentful behavior and his role as leader of the Spider-Society.
Though the second movie installment didn't reveal much about Miguel's past, his character has a complete backstory in the comics.
It turns out that Miguel O'Hara was transformed into Spider-Man 2099 by experimenting with a drug called Rapture that altered his DNA.
That's why in the movie we see him giving himself injections — all because of his failed experiment that gave him his Spider-Man abilities, which he now has to control with a serum.
So, in essence, Miguel O'Hara's back story to becoming Spider-Man is the most painful one.
His past has left him guilt-ridden and struggling with addiction, and the resemblance between the way his powers came to him and Miles Morales may be the focal point of his hatred for the latter.
In addition, the loss of Miguel's daughter and the destruction of his reality adds an extra layer of depth to his emotional pain.
Although Miquel O'Hara stands in Mile's way and is presented as one of the movie's antagonists, he doesn't pose as much of a threat to the character as other movie villains.
Fans hope that in the next movie, the Spideys will be able to overcome their conflict and unite to defeat the real evil.
