Stylish eclecticism and witty social commentary, infused with the spirit of funk and classic sci-fi motifs.

Summary

  • Netflix 's original movies are always a source of enjoyment thanks to original and fresh concepts.
  • However, few of these films are universally acclaimed by critics and audiences alike.
  • Despite this, the new sci-fi comedy earned a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes in 2023.

Black cinema has always been known for its innovation, for the spirit of freedom and independence that is indispensable to the progress of the medium, combined with daring experimentation and social criticism that is not afraid to be explicit.

Arguably one of the top black filmmakers in Hollywood is Jordan Peele, effectively delivering candid themes about the experiences of people of color and what may be lurking behind the ostensible smiles and politeness of seemingly well-meaning, liberal-minded white people. And while Peele is undoubtedly an influential creator, critics and audiences are far from praising his work, as well as that of other black creators, to the skies.

This July, however, Netflix's library was enriched by the debut film of black director Juel Taylor, which was the flawless exception, delighting audiences and receiving a perfect 100% from them on Rotten Tomatoes.

John Boyega Fights Against His Cloning

We're talking about the satirical sci-fi comedy They Cloned Tyrone, which was released in U.S. theaters on July 14 and on Netflix on July 21. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Juel Taylor, who also served as co-screenwriter with his longtime writing partner Tony Rettenmaier (they worked together on the script for Space Jam: A New Legacy 2021).

The film combines the cinematic techniques and ideological approach of the aforementioned Jordan Peele, the charisma of classic blaxploitation films, as well as the work of John Carpenter and Harold Ramis. All of this eclecticism is skillfully blended to deliver one of the most engaging and witty films of 2023.

They Cloned Tyrone is about a young black man who makes his living selling drugs and discovers that all the black residents of his neighborhood are experiments in cloning, mind control, and generational breeding in order to assimilate all people of color into a solidly white society. But is it true, or is it all the result of collective insanity?

The movie stars John Boyega, Jamie Foxx and Teyonah Parris. The former continues to conquer Hollywood with his incomparable talent, while Foxx and Parris once again amaze audiences with their range of acting skills. Of particular note is Foxx, whose performance is clearly one of the best in years, as the actor was not afraid to look ridiculous and comical, playing pimp Slick Charles and becoming the embodiment of black conspiracy sentiment.

Netflix's Only 2023 Original With 100%

They Cloned Tyrone was the only Netflix original feature film from 2023 to receive a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. This only confirms how much the general public needs fresh and original concepts that make fun of the shortcomings of modern society.

It is worth noting that 100% of this score came from regular viewers, since according to the results of the critics' reviews, the general Tomatometer was only 95%. An impressive number, which proves the consistency and originality of the film, but still not perfect. Hopefully, black filmmakers will receive well-deserved universal praise for their projects at a later date, but until then, we suggest you enjoy They Cloned Tyrone, available for streaming on Netflix.
