The One Good Will Hunting Line Minnie Driver Absolutely Hated
Of all the brilliant lines in the movie the actress picked the one that really, really rubs her the wrong way.
Yes, it's that one. The most famous line in the entire movie: "How do you like them apples?"
It's a line that has been repeated time and time again and was basically brought back into the vernacular when Matt Damon said it.
The phrase actually came from WWI when the Allies' anti-tank grenades were nicknamed "toffee apple" because they looked a bit like an apple on a stick. And its first appearance on the big screen came in the 1959 movie Rio Bravo when just such a grenade was thrown.
But of course, it's best known for being used in Good Will Hunting in 1997.
So, what is it that Minnie Driver doesn't like about it?
Basically, she feels it's quite derogatory to women – and says that she has always hated it. Now, the 90s were a different time and it's not a phrase that would have necessarily been picked up back then. But you have to admit she has a point.
As she revealed in a Twitter conversation with David Quantick, the line "objectifies' her character, Skylar, and suggests that she was there to be 'won' by Will or Clark (the Michael Bolton lookalike). In fact, Driver goes as far as to say that it makes her character "redundant".
Now, this sort of battle for a woman's affections is a pretty common theme in movies, and let's face it, lots of them wouldn't exist without it. And there is the argument that Damon plays a young man that would use that kind of phrase in the context in which Will did.
But that doesn't mean Driver – or indeed Damon – needs to like it.
This revelation came about as part of a chat about which lines the actress does like. Responding to Quantick, Driver tweeted: "Also, possibly my favourite line from Grosse Pointe Blank: 'Is that that dead guy's blood?"

There followed a whole host of replies from fans letting her know which of her lines they liked the best – one of which was: "How do you like them apples?"
To which Driver tweeted back to reveal that one of the most famous lines in one of her most famous movies, was in fact a line she's not a fan of.
And there you have it. A nice little bit of Hollywood trivia that you can drop in next time you hear someone say it.
