Locked in an office for most of the day, the people in it came to recognise and understand each other's weaknesses and strengths, and made sure to point them out regularly in brilliantly written jokes.

However, there was one aspect of the show that was particularly painful to watch, especially for those trapped in such a relationship hell.

Why The Office’s Kelly and Ryan Are Toxic

There were plenty of situations where both Ryan and Kelly were downright horrible to each other. However, there was nothing that could seemingly tear them apart.

Thriving on dysfunction, they couldn't get enough of each other and the thrill of the chaos this relationship brought to their lives.

Throughout the show, we've seen many instances of people really not being right for each other. Starting with Pam and Roy, who have been together for 8 years and engaged for another 3 with no real end in sight, and ending with Andy and Angela, where she cheated on him and never really wanted to be with him.

What they all have in common is that they all ended. Later rather than sooner, but still over and done with.

Instead of moving on with their lives, Ryan and Kelly chose each other again, entering another cycle of toxic romance and passion that was destined to end in tragedy.

Of course, to leave a stable, happy, drama-free relationship and choose a state of constant misery, you have to be truly in love with the person you're going to. And there's no doubt that it was love (if not obsession) that brought Kelly and Ryan back together against all odds.

But love isn't always enough to build a life with someone, common sense is usually required as well. In this case, the wiser option would be to move across the country and join the witness protection programme.
