The Office Fans, Rise Up: Female-Led Remake Is On The Way
It will be a fresh look at the story that is familiar to many viewers.
The American remake of the British TV series The Office, starring the charismatic Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer and others, has long since become a cult classic.
It has been announced that the legendary sitcom will get another iteration – this time with the famous comedian and actress Felicity Ward in the lead role.
The Australian remake will be a female adaptation of the hit series and will be released on Amazon Prime Video.
The story is set in the post-Covid era, when the main character, Hannah Howard, receives word from headquarters that her branch is being closed.
In order to maintain her leadership position and her team, the boss begins to make promises to her employees that she is not prepared to fulfill, and to weave a playful office conspiracy.
The Australian adaptation of The Office is the 13th iteration of the show originally created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The original series also has local adaptations in France, Canada, Chile, Israel and the Middle East.
The original series followed the daily life of the Wernham Hogg paper company, run by David Brent.
In the US remake, the company was renamed Dunder Mifflin with Michael Scott as CEO. In the Australian The Office the company will be called Flinley Craddick.
Creator of the original show Ricky Gervais commented on the news:
"I'm very excited about Australia remaking my little show from the turn of the century. Office politics have changed a bit in 20 years, so can't wait to see how they navigate a modern-day David Brent."
The original UK Office was created in 2001 as a series about the lives of office workers at the fictional paper company Wernham Hogg.
The series was broadcast on the BBC and its ratings were not very high.
But the international success was great: the rights to broadcast The Office were sold to 80 countries, at the most important Golden Globe Awards, it won prizes for the best comedy on television and for the best male role.
The show was never intended to be a long-running project and ended in 2003 after only two seasons.
But despite its short television life, The Office quickly became a cult classic in the UK, and also served as a launching pad for the careers of several then-unknown actors.
