The Night Caller: What Is It About & Is It Even Worth Watching?
Buckle up, we’re going for a night ride!
Remember Robert De Niro’s Taxi Driver? Back in 1976, this neo-noir gem offered the dark story of a driver who works nights in New York City and gradually goes mad.
The new British series is set in Liverpool, a city that is clearly much smaller than NYC, but still full of people and things that can drive you crazy. Titled The Night Caller, it’s a must-watch for those who miss good old thrillers, including De Niro’s cultish film.
The Mysterious Story Behind The Night Caller
The four-episode show starts by introducing us to Tony, a teacher who has just lost his job, marriage and hope for the future, forcing him to take up a job as a cab driver to carry late night passengers around the city.
However, quite soon he finds solace listening to an all-night phone-in radio program hosted by a DJ called Lawrence. He finally feels he’s listened to and his bond with the host develops more and more, turning into some kind of an obsession.
This addiction puts Tony’s life and even his new love interest in danger, as Lawrence’s impact on the driver’s sanity becomes insidious.
Reasons Why You Need to Binge The Night Caller
The premise alone is already of great interest to us, as both the show’s protagonist and antagonist are really unique and even unlikely. These days, in the era of social media influencers, displaying an obsession like Tony's is incredibly relatable.
More than that, The Night Caller is not what you might expect from this show — it appears to be a slow-burn gem that takes some time to pull up the stakes and reveal all the horrors the main character is actually facing.
Just like the Scorsese-directed Taxi Driver, the series builds the tension night after night, while occasionally giving some hints at what comes next. It’s a twisted roller coaster of a show, and you’ll definitely enjoy it if you like solving movie puzzles.
The leading cast’s performances are also worth-watching, as the show stars Robert Glenister (Hustle) as Tony and Sean Pertwee (Elementary, Gotham) as Lawrence, who are no strangers to suspenseful thrillers.
Luckily, all episodes of this TV gem are already out, so you can now binge The Night Caller on Prime and try to guess how Tony’s night shifts can end.
