This movie deserves a whole lot more love.

Summary

  • This movie was written, produced and directed by one of the most controversial directors in Hollywood.
  • It stars a plethora of A-list actors.
  • And only a 67% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The year was 2019, and one of Hollywood's most controversial directors has presented audiences with the final installment of a trilogy that began with a bang and continued with one of the most questionable and out-of-the-blue sequels in history. Not surprisingly, the movie in question was coldly received by critics.

Despite a star-studded cast and an award-winning director, it has a score of only 37% on the Tomatometer. Audiences are more positive, rating it at 67% out of more than 10,000 reviews. And fan love for the film has recently pushed it into the top ten on Netflix.

It's the third part of a trilogy

We're talking about M. Night Shyamalan 's Glass, the third and final part of the Unbreakable trilogy. The first part, starring Bruce Willis, was released in 2000, and the second, Split, starring James McAvoy, was released sixteen years later.

The three films come together to form a tense superhero thriller that has Shyamalan's fingerprints all over it, from lush world-building to shocking plot twists.

The movie picks up where Split left off, and while you can enjoy Glass as a standalone movie, we highly recommend watching both Split and Unbreakable first to fully appreciate it.

What's it about?

David Dunn (Bruce Willis) and his son Joseph (Spencer Treat Clark) track down The Horde (McAvoy), a man with multiple personalities and a superhuman villain.

After rescuing four teenage girls kidnapped by The Horde and held in an abandoned factory, the father and son are captured by Dr. Ellie Staple (Sarah Paulson). They are then held in two separate rooms set up to focus on their greatest weaknesses.

She doesn't believe they have superpowers, or that superhumans are even a real thing. Then the Horde escapes, and now everyone's life is on the line.

What did the critics have to say about it?

Critics were scathing when the film was released, and it was widely considered to be M. Night Shyamalan's worst work. Still, it made $247 million against a budget of $20 million. Not bad for a movie.

Viewers writing on Rotten Tomatoes were far more complimentary, describing Glass as "Marvel Comics flew over the cuckoo's nest" and "a true masterpiece". Interestingly, the second comment came from a reviewer who also said the movie was ahead of its time.

The fact that it's taken five years for Glass to secure its place as one of the most popular movies on the world's leading streaming service could be seen as evidence that this prophecy has come true.

Where else can I watch it?

In addition to streaming on Netflix, you can buy or rent Glass on Prime, Apple TV, and Vudu.

Split is in all the same places, but is also on Peacock if you have a subscription. It has a 78% critics score and a 79% audience score on RT.

Unbreakable isn't on Netflix, but it's on Vudu, Prime Max and Apple TV.
