It is a must-watch for fans of The Shining and Psycho.

This year has already proved it’s fruitful in high-class horror movies that bring new motifs and techniques to the genre or address its classics. Earlier in 2024 we saw such gems as Late Night with the Devil, Infested, Abigail, Immaculate and The First Omen.

However, there is one movie that is a rare guest of the year’s best horror lists, but it certainly deserves our attention. It is also proved by the fact it is now holding the third place in HBO’s global top and is gaining more and more viewership on the platform.

The plot revolves around Gwen, a young woman who takes up a job at a remote motel. While working her first night shift there, she starts suspecting she’s not alone in the hallways, and there is a character from her troubled past watching her. However, Gwen is quick to realize that it’s the motel itself that is tormenting her during this long night.

This synopsis offers us another haunted house plot, when a person gets surrounded by supernatural creatures living in the building and trying to get rid of its inhabitants.

However, it goes even further, as there is a haunted hotel leitmotif, that is perfectly exploited in brilliant movie adaptations of Steven King’s horror novels that we all know, Jack Nicholson’s The Shining (1980) and John Cusack’s 1408 (2007).

Besides, the first half of the film is reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) that focuses on a woman who falls victim to a creepy motel proprietor. Thus, it’s obvious the movie we’re talking about aims to call back cultish horror gems in a way.

Apart from that, 2024’s horror uses jump scares so artfully that they can scare even the genre’s veterans, and you can’t even imagine how unpredictable the final twist is.

Titled Night Shift, this Phoebe Tonkin-starring horror is definitely a must-watch for those in search of new worth-watching flicks. Its audience score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes proves it is of great interest to people who miss the good old horrors.

Check out this haunted hotel movie, as Night Shift is available for watching on Prime.
