The Last of Us Creator Vows HBO Show Won't Repeat Notorious GoT Mistake
Despite enjoying massive success across the world, Game of Thrones is still being lambasted over its train-wreck final season. But HBO seems to be learning from its own mistakes.
The Last of Us videogames creator Neil Druckmann has vowed that the upcoming HBO adaptation of his games is not going to fall into the same trap that another HBO hit has fallen victim to.
"We have no plans to tell any stories beyond adapting the games," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "We won't run into the same issue as Game of Thrones since Part II doesn't end on a cliffhanger."
The showrunners pledge that The Last of Us is also not going to follow the lead of another big hit gone bad, The Walking Dead. According to them, The Last of Us will not become a "spinning-plates-go-on-forever show" that does not know when to end.
"When it becomes a perpetual motion machine, it just can't help but get kind of … stupid. Endings mean everything to me," Craig Mazin, one of the showrunners, told the outlet.
However, it looks like fans are not rushing to believe the showrunners.
Other fans recalled that they "heard the same about The Witcher ", and even though this particular franchise was adapted by Netflix and not HBO, it looks like people are wary about being overly ecstatic when it comes to videogame adaptations these days.
"Considering they've race swapped some of the characters, miscast others, and the synapsis for the first episode states it'll be starting with events that never happened in the game... Yeah, Neil [Druckmann] is lying through his untalented teeth," Twitter user Kosaba11 argued.
The Last of Us hits HBO on January 15, 2023.
