Let’s just hope it won’t haunt us in reality.

Summary:

  • The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian Hulu TV drama, based on the novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood.
  • The show premiered back in 2017 and released 5 seasons since. Season 6 is going to be the final season of the show.
  • However, according to the latest news, it will not be back in 2024.

While it seems like every year brings us one step closer to the horrific reality of The Handmaid's Tale that Margaret Atwood painted in her novel and then beautifully adapted into the show, the release of the final season keeps getting pushed further and further into the future.

Just recently, season 5 of the show crossed a one-year line after its premiere in September 2022, and fans of the show were getting more and more hopeful to see at least some news or updates on what to expect next. The thought that season 6 was on its way was comforting enough for a while, but it wasn't enough to keep fans happy for that long.

The latest update, which reveals the date of the start of production for the final season, isn't what anyone was expecting. Instead of giving viewers hope, it prepares them for an even longer wait than anyone could have imagined.

According to The Cinemaholic, there's plenty of time for viewers to morally prepare themselves to say goodbye to the show. The Handmaid's Tale is set to begin filming in Ontario, Canada, in September 2024, two years after season 5 was released on Hulu.

Considering the length of the production and post-production phases, it's safe to assume that The Handmaid's Tale season 6 won't be released until the summer of 2025, if not later.

Though the reason for this delay hasn't been stated, like any other scheduling changes in the industry, it likely has to do with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that took place in early 2023. Many projects had to come up with different shooting dates, as well as take into account the schedules of the cast.

While this update means the fandom will have to buckle up for a few more years, there is a bright side. It has already been announced that the show's creator, Bruce Miller, will be stepping down to work on the series' sequel, The Testaments. With so much extra time, we can only imagine the stunning quality it will have once it is released.

Stay tuned if you want to keep up with all the news and behind-the-scenes updates from The Handmaid's Tales, including the release date for season 6. Until then, you can binge-watch all 5 seasons of the show by streaming it on Hulu.
